It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Samuel Furkalo of Dauphin formerly of Snow Lake on May 12, 2018. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather.
Samuel was born on October 21,1939 in Dauphin to John and Matilda (Cholka) Furkalo. His parents passed away at a very early age leaving his brothers and sisters to raise him. He took his schooling at Lemberg School in Keld. He finished with Grade 9 and 10 at McKenzie Middle School in Dauphin.
During his childhood many hours were spent playing with the cats in the hayloft and watching his brother Nick split wood. His brothers and sisters enjoyed listening to Sam as a young boy upstairs in their house calling play by play to the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey games.
As a young man Sam left his home to work up North as a line cutter during the winter months. In 1960 he married the love of his life Margaret, then they settled in Flin Flon where they started their life together. In 1965 they moved to Snow Lake and raised a family of 4 children. He worked hard as a miner underground for over 25 years to provide for his family. Snow Lake was home to many friends. He was very active with the Elks Club. He loved fishing and camping with his family. Many fond memories were made on the lakes and creeks around Snow Lake. Gardening was another passion that Sam had...and was always providing friends and neighbours with fresh produce.
In 1996 Sam and Margaret retired to Dauphin where the land was fertile and the poplar trees were plenty. Growing gardens and cutting wood were his pastimes. He loved spoiling his 3 grandkids and his furry friend Whiskers.
Sam was predeceased by his parents John and Matilda Furkalo; brothers Matt, Nick and Alex Furkalo of Dauphin; sisters Nancy Kotelniski of Angusville MB, Mary Jerama of Strathclair MB, and Katherine who passed away in early childhood.
Left to cherish special memories are his wife of 57 years Margaret Furkalo (Prokopowich); brother Phillip (Anne) Furkalo; sisters Ann Sadowy of Ethelbert, and Joyce (Mike) Semus of Windsor, ON; daughter Darlene (Philip) and Nathan Girard of Calgary, AB; son Patrick (Deanne) Jorja and Jaxen Furkalo of Dauphin; daughters Karen Furkalo and Tammy Furkalo of Winnipeg. As well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
