Michael Kukurudz Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our parents Michael Kukurudz  at 2:37 am on January 11, 2019 and Lena Kukurudz (nee Sidlar) at 6:36 pm on January 11, 2019 at the Grandview Personal Care Home.
Michael Kukurudz was born on December 13, 1927 at Marco, MB (RM of Rossburn), the eldest son of Nick and Molly Kukurudz (nee Skomorowski). In 1933 he moved with his parents to their homestead in Pleasant Valley District in the RM of Grandview.  In 1934 he started school at Denepro School, in June of 1942 he had to leave school and help with farming as his father’s health was failing.  His father passed away in August of 1946.  Michael took over the farming.  In 1950 he was hired as secretary treasurer of Denepro and remained on the board till 1962 when the school was closed due to the lack of students. In 1964 he served as secretary treasurer of Halton until 1967, at which time Intermountain School Division was formed.
Lena was born on June 14, 1930 at the Petlura District of Manitoba.  She was the second youngest daughter of Mike & Nellie Sidlar (nee Nykolaisheyn).  She attended Pozir School, but then stayed home for a year to help out on the farm. Lena worked as a waitress in Dauphin at Sam Regush’s café and over the next four years worked in Minnedosa, Thunder Bay and Brandon.
 Michael and Lena met in 1952 and were married in the fall of 1953 and together they farmed in the Pleasant Valley area growing grain and raising cattle, some hogs and chickens, and growing a large garden and flowers.   They were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Iris was born January 26, 1955 and Linda was born February 23, 1959.  Michael was a bit of a carpenter and together he and Lena built a new home for their family in 1961 as well as all the buildings on the farm.
 Michael and Lena were members of the St. Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church in Petlura.  Michael served on the church committee as treasurer-secretary and later as president.  They both joined the choir is 1970 and sang for over 40 years. Michael and Lena farmed till the fall of 1992 then retired and moved to the Town of Grandview.  In 1994 Michael & Lena became members of the St. Elias parish is Grandview and Michael was active working around the church, hall and cemetery.
 Michael was predeceased by his parents, father Nicholas, August 1946 & mother Molly December 2003; sister Olga, July 1996; brother Stan, September 2005 and 3 siblings in infancy. Lena was predeceased by her parents, Mike & Nellie in 1946; six brothers Bill 1966, Joe 1986, John 1990, Paul 1991, Steve 1995, Fred 1995; three sisters Mary 1920, Teenie 1993, Annie 1996.
 Michael and Lena leave to mourn their passing and cherish fond memories two daughters, Iris (Wes) Bugera, Linda (Ray) Kadeshuk of Winnipeg; grandsons Andrew & Eric Bugera; granddaughter Jennifer Kadeshuk.  Michael’s brothers Matt (Jean) Kukurudz of Dauphin, William (Olivia) Kukurudz of Sudbury; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Prayers were offered on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 5:00 pm from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin, MB.

Funeral Liturgy was held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 3:00 pm from St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Grandview, MB with Rev Father Yaroslav Strukhlyak officiating.  Interment followed in St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Grandview, MB.
