John Pidskalny Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Pidskalny. With his family by his side Dad passed away peacefully at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre on January 09, 2019 at the age of 95 years.
Dad was born on April 23, 1923, the second son to Michael and Jessie (Shewchuk) Pidskalny in Ethelbert, Manitoba. Dad grew up in the Doroshenko area, helping on the family farm.  His father passed away while Dad was very young so he stayed on the farm with his mother.
On June 03, 1944, he married Helen Bewsky and they enjoyed over 74 years of marriage together.  They were blessed with six children (1 son and 5 daughters) and except for a few years they lived in Winnipeg, they lived most of their life in the Ethelbert area.  They loved travelling and enjoyed many adventures to Windsor, Toronto, Sarnia, Edmonton, Calgary and Kelowna.  They also travelled to England, thru Europe, and to Weslaco, Texas.
In 1997 they moved to Dauphin and enjoyed a quieter life.  Dad missed the farm life and travelled to Ethelbert or Fork River every chance he had to help where he could.
Left to cherish Dad’s memories is his loving wife Helen,  son Ron (Jacky), Kelowna, BC.; Diane (Alex Hrychuk), Fork River; Dorothy Adair, Winnipeg; Audrey (Buddy Herman), Ethelbert;  Pat (Tim Dutchyszen) Winnipeg; Sandra (Wayne Drewniak), Lundar;  13 grandchildren, Tamara (Todd), Alison (Doug), Ben (Tara), Nika (Laurence),  AJ (Cory), Justin, Richard (Kayla), Michelle, Chris, Megan (Mike), Mark (Nicole)Melanie (Ryan), Ashley and  eight great grandchildren, Matthew, Charlotte, Alba, Everly, Bowen, Tyler, Blake and Andrew.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, his only brother Steve, his granddaughter Carla Herman, sister-in-law Tillie and nephew Steven Pidskalny.
Dad loved farming.  He operated the grader for the RM of Ethelbert for many years and was a volunteer ambulance driver.    Dad was an active member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic church.  Dad sang with the Vitriwka Choir and volunteered at the Dauphin Ukrainian Festival with Mom for many years.  They were members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish of the Resurrection in Dauphin for 21 years. Dad loved playing with and teasing his grandchildren and great grandchildren, hunting, fishing, camping, picking mushrooms and playing cards. Dad usually kept score and his mental math beat any calculator.  He was also hard to beat……if he was…….it was usually by Mom.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kish for all his compassion and special care of Dad.
Prayers were offered on Friday, January 18, 2019 from Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin.  Funeral liturgy was held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 10 a.m. from Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ethelbert, with Rev. Father Yaroslav Strukhlyak. Gigi’s grandchildren were his Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers.  Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Dad may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church cemetery Fund, Box 56, Ethelbert, Manitoba, R0L 0T0.
