Gail Gushulak Obituary

It is with profound grief and sorrow that we, the family of Gail, announce her passing on May 18, 2019 at the Winnipegosis Palliative Care Unit at the age of 64. Gail’s battle with cancer was brief; however it was a hard fought battle to the very end. Gail passed peacefully surrounded by her family who loved and supported her faithfully.
Gail was born on April 7th, 1955 in Winnipegosis to Metro and Sylvia Chipney (Mulessa). She was the second oldest of four daughters. Her oldest sister, Mary Anne, then Gail followed 13 months later with Karen, then baby sister Geri.
She was raised on the farm at Rice Lake and attended school there and at Fork River. The family moved to Winnipegosis in November of 1969 where Gail completed her Grade 12.
Gail married Kirby Gushulak on May 22, 1976. Their son Kelly was born on September 17, 1977 in Dauphin. Gail waitressed at the hotel in Winnipegosis prior to their move to Calgary in 1979. She worked as a cashier at a Co-op grocery store there. They returned to Manitoba in 1982. Gail worked as a Health Care Aide at the Winnipegosis Hospital and Personal Care Home for 17 years until a back injury prevented her from continuing. She went on to have 3 separate back surgeries. She loved working with the elderly at the care home. It wasn’t uncommon for her to prepare meals at home and deliver them to her little Babas at PCH. She would also take them out for drives and ice cream on her days off. When Gail could no longer work as a Health Care Aide, she attended the Dauphin branch of Assiniboine Community College and graduated with a certificate as an administrative assistant.
Gail loved to fish and could out fish all of us. Kirby and Gail spent their honeymoon fishing off the West Waterhen Bridge. She was fortunate and skilled enough to receive many master angler awards.
From a very young age Gail loved to watch Hockey Night in Canada. After living in Calgary, her favorite team became the Calgary Flames. She also loved to watch curling. By far, her favorite pastime was spending time with family and especially her grandson Kaysen. She also enjoyed gardening and her flowerbeds allowed her to showcase her creativity. Cats were her favorite pets and she had many over the years.
Gail had a great sense of humor and could always be counted on to cheer you up. She was hard working, generous, kind hearted and brave. Gail’s proudest achievement was her son, Kelly. He was the light of her life.
Gail is survived by her husband, Kirby, son Kelly (daughter-in-law Erin Murray), grandson Kaysen, mother Sylvia Chipney, sisters Mary Anne Clarkson (Ralph Reich), Karen Flett (James), Geri Harrison (David) brothers-in-law Randy (Heather) and Cammie Gushulak (Trish) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gail was predeceased by two infant sons, Dean on June 10th, 1975 and Ryan on September 20th, 1979, her father Metro Chipney, mother-in-law Joyce, father-in-law Norman and sister-in-law Tracy Sanderson.
The family would like to thank staff at the Winnipegosis Hospital for their compassionate care of Gail.
If friends so wish, a donation to Cancer Care in memory of Gail may be made.
Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
Gail will be missed and forever in our hearts. Her joyful laugh has been silenced much too soon.
