Elsie (nee Demchuk) Lesyk

Elsie Lesyk passed away on November 30, 2014 at St. Paul's Personal Care home in Dauphin, Manitoba at the age of 88 years.

She was born to Alex and Mary Demchuk and raised on a farm west of Sifton, Manitoba. Farm life agreed with her. She liked the outdoors, helping her dad with chores, playing with the baby animals and sometimes driving horses with her dad. Her education started at Ukraina School, where she developed many fond memories of her classmates and teachers. Later she spent time schooling at Wycliff Schools and St. Mary's Academy in Yorkton and then in Teacher's Training on William in Winnipeg. She taught school for a total of 31 years. She never had discipline problems. Elsie enjoyed working with children and helping those in need. She loved the church, being a choir member in Sifton and Dauphin and a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. She belonged to several organizations and was awarded by many; Manitobans Volunteer Award, Heritage Preservation, Air Force of Canada, Governor Generals Commemorative Medal, Certification of Appreciation by Fort Dauphin, also by Trembowla Cross of Freedom and more. She also wrote two books "Sifton Then and Now" and Wings over Dauphin", she also compiled a Trembowla history pamphlet. She enjoyed trips with Harry, criss crossing Canada to the West and to the Yukon, to the North, and also south to Palm & Desert Springs as well as pilgrimages to Rome. Her dwindling health forced her to return. In her final years, she moved to Lorray Manor. She succumbed to a rare kind of cancer taking her to Calgary to Dr. McKinnon, a specialist who too, had not seen the like.

Elsie is predeceased by her parents Alex & Mary Demchuk, sister Verna (Walter) Hupalo, her son Clarence (Chester) and her husband Harry, and brother-in-law John Cholka.

She leaves to mourn her daughter Theresa, her five grandchildren Christopher, Christina, Aaron, Quinton and Scott, four great- grandchildren, sister Zenia (John) Cholka, brother Sylvester (Rosalee) Demchuk, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Elsie will be remembered for her love of outdoors, landscaping, crafts, picking mushrooms and more. She loved playing cards, especially canasta. She also loved her rosary which was always in reaching distance or in her jacket. In this she found strength needed to overcome the pain which at times was unbearable. She was blessed with 88 years of life.

Rosary and prayers were offered on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from Dauphin Ukrainian Catholic Church of The Resurrection. A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. from Dauphin Ukrainian Catholic Church of The Resurrection with Very Rev. Fr. Oleg Bodnarski officiating. Interment was held in the Riverside Cemetery, Dauphin, Manitoba. Laying Elsie to rest were pallbearers Knights of Columbus, honor guard was Ukrainian Catholic Church Women's League.
