Busy hands are now idle. After a long and fruitful life Anne Sadowy (nee Furkalo) passed away peacefully on May 5, 2019.
Born to John and Matilda (Cholka) Furkalo on October 7, 1932, Anne enjoyed her childhood on the family farm in The Keld district. Many happy hours were spent picking mushrooms and berries, and helping out with the farm chores with her brothers and sisters.
She attended Lemberg School and later graduated from Normal School and Brandon University with her teaching degree. She started her career in a one room teacherage school, where a young carpenter, home from the war, would come in everyday to start the coal stove. In 1954 Anne married Arseny Sadowy, they settled in Ethelbert, built their new home, and raised 2 daughters.
Anne taught at Ethelbert School for over 30 years and enjoyed playing soccer with her “children”. Many former students have expressed love for their “favourite Grade 2 teacher”, Mrs Sadowy.
She played on the Ladies Softball team, and also had numerous trophies from horseshoe tournaments. Gardening was a life-long passion and she liked sharing the fruits of her labour with family and friends.
Anne’s life revolved around her family, school, community and church. She was active in St. Peter & Paul’s Ukrainian Women’s League, 4-H, Ethelbert Echo newspaper, and the Senior’s Drop in Centre.
She looked forward to Monday evening bingos with friends, not that she won very often! In her later years, Anne was among the first to volunteer, whether it was catering for events, driving seniors, or doing whatever was needed. Her cheerful and helpful nature will be sorely missed by family, friends, and the people of Ethelbert. Anne was a loving and supportive mother, and will be especially missed by daughter Donna.
Left to mourn are her daughter Donna, husband Greg; sister Joyce; sisters-in-law Anne Furkalo and Margaret Furkalo; special feline companion Roscoe; and many nieces and nephews.
Anne was predeceased by daughter Dhyan; husband Arseny; sisters Nancy and Mary; brothers Matt, Nick, Sam and Phillip.
The family wants to express sincere gratitude for the care and compassion shown by Dr. Mary Egan and nursing staff at palliative care Assiniboine Centre (Brandon Regional Health Centre).
Flowers gratefully declined and donations in Anne’s memory may be made to the Ethelbert School Playground Fundraising PO Box 241 Ethelbert MB R0L 0T0 or a charity of your choice.
