Viola Diana Wellborn passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Home in Dauphin on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the age of 101 years. Her son Gerald and daughters Margaret and Eileen were at her side.
Viola was born on September 25, 1910 in Walhalla, North Dakota. She was the fifth of eight children born to Adelard and Clara Dumas.
Viola met her husband Miles Stanley Wellborn at a dance at West Bay School near the Wellborn family farm close to the mouth of the Valley River. They were married in the beginning of the depression. They raised four children through hard times, with Viola raising turkeys, selling eggs to the hatchery and milking many cows to help her husband.
After the death of Miles in 1965, Viola continued to run the farm with the help of her son Gerald until 1995. Her greatest glory was having her children and grandchildren visit and help her on the farm.
Viola was predeceased by her husband Miles in 1965; son Clarence in 1970; great-grandsons Brayden Wellborn in 2004 and Johnathan Senger in 2010; son-in-law Robert Atchison in 2010.
Viola is survived by daughters Margaret Rose Atchison of Edmonton, Alberta and Eileen Clara Williams of Edmonton, Alberta; son Gerald Thomas and wife Betty Elaine of rural Dauphin; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild. There are numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Funeral service was held on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. The eulogy was delivered by Debra Martin and Bryan Atchison. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Laying Viola to rest were Pallbearers Don Wellborn, Larry Stenhouse, Garth Mackie, Gregory Wellborn, Tim Wellborn and Bryan Atchison.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Viola may honour her memory by making donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

I am so blessed that I had the chance to know you for so long. You have been an inspiration and will be missed greatly. I’m sad that you never got to meet your Great-Great granddaughter, Evelyn, but we tell her about you all the time and she LOVES the stuffed cow you gave her. my thoughts and prayers are with all the family on the loss of Auntie Vi,she was a great woman and we have many fond memories to tell of her.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I only met her a few times, but she treated me like one of the Family. I’ll always remember her saying to me that she had to be careful, that she was getting “tight” on the wine she was drinking, as she laughed. She had such a good sense of humor and loved everyone she cared for. Always had a tear in her eye. She was a wonderful woman and She will be sorely missed. Lots of love susan
I feel very privileged to have met such a wonderful, well humoured strong lady. Viola will be sadly missed but she has left her family with a great legacy of good times and loving memories. Maggie Atchison
Gerald, Margaret, Eileen, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren:
We were so sorry to hear of your loss.
Vi was a wonderful neighbour and friend and we all have many special memories.
Love and condolences to all of you.
Over the thirty years that I have known my dear friend Debbie Martin, I have often heard her speak lovingly of her..”Gram”. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to meet this special lady, who always had a twinkle in her eye. When Viola was in her eighties, there she was cooing over Daniel as she slathered him with “Vicks”. A few years later, when Gram was in her nineties, I bumped into Margaret and her Mom late night shopping at Sears. How blessed I was to be included in her 100th birthday party. I’m sure the whole family will be uplifted and strengthened by the memories of her love and devotion to them. May God’s most precious blessings be with you now and in the months to come. Love, Linda Gibson

Hi Gramma, It’s Irene, remember me? You always gave me that sweet smile and said” Of course I remember you”.
Gramma, you were always so kind and gentle with me. I loved seeing you and always felt special being with you. I have never had a gramma and have always imagined one would be just like you! Thank you for being my gramma too.
