Louie Malcolm Obituary

Louie  Malcolm
Waabishkaa Omashkooz
White Elk

It is with sadness that the family of Louie Malcolm announces his passing on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the age of 81 years.

Louie was born on July 3, 1942 in Ebb and Flow, MB.  He had many fond memories of his childhood on the far, with his parents and large family.  He often shared stories of feeding the horses and cattle, milking cows, working in the garden, making hay with a team of horses, going out with the family to dig Seneca root in the summer and making the early springtime trip to Sugar Island to make maple syrup.  He enjoyed the time he spent at his granny's helping her with the chores and listening to the stories that she told.

His education began at the school that was down at "the Front" at Ebb and Flow until he attended the Assiniboine Residential School in Winnipeg. He stayed there for one year, but came home to help his mother and siblings with the farm work when his dad became ill with TB and had to go to a sanatorium.  After he moved back home, Louie took the remainder of his schooling at the Hill Ridge School in Bacon Ridge.

Louie was always a hard worker and never without a job for very long, whether it be fishing with various commercial fishermen or going to work summers on the railroad.  He took auto mechanics at ACC in Brandon and went on to work in a garage in Winnipeg for a time.  An opportunity to move home to work came when Chief Alfred Beaulieu approached him to be the band manager for Ebb and Flow working at the old band office near Sucker Creek.  This led to a lengthy career in various aspects of administrative work.

Louie was the executive director of West Region Tribal Council when it was founded in 1979 until 1981.  He then came back to Ebb and Flow to work as band manager until 1993 when he became Chief of Ebb and Flow First Nation.  He served his community as chief until 1996 when he returned to West Region to serve as the First Nation Governance Advisor.  Once again the opportunity arose to work at home as CEO of the Band until 2006.  Louie said he "retired" after that, but you'd never know it because he didn't slow down one bit.

Louie was always willing to share the wealth of knowledge he had accumulated over the years and was often asked for his advice and input by various organizations.  Louie served as a member of the Coalition of First Nations with interest in Riding Mountain National Park as Ebb and Flow's representative.  He was also the Chairman of the Knowledge Council for Treaty 2.  In the last few years, Louie got great enjoyment in working with the Elders program at the Ebb and Flow School.  He was eager to share everything he knew with the students.

Throughout his life and in addition to his other work, Louie always had his horses and a successful cattle ranch, first at the homestead where he was raised in Ebb and Flow and later at the farm at Horse Bluff with Bernice.  Horses were a true passion throughout his whole life.  He could name every horse he ever owned.  Louie was a very competitive Chariot and Chuckwagon racer.  Over his 50 year long career in the sport, he won many trophies and buckles.  On July 3, 2022, Louie spent his 80th birthday racing his wagon and chariot at one of his favorite race meets in Carberry, MB.  Many great friends were made on the chuckwagon circuit whom he referred to as his "chuckwagon family".

Always with a need for speed, Louie spent many winters racing snowmobiles across Manitoba both on the oval track and snow and ice drag races.

An avid hunter, Louie enjoyed many trips to the Duck Mountains and other favorite spots with his hunting buddies to hunt for elk, moose, and deer to keep the freezer full and to share with family and friends.

Louie was very proud of all of his children and nothing made him happier than seeing them all working and doing well.  When his boys were young, he kept them active in hockey and coached many teams through the years.  One of Louie's favorite things was taking kids for sleigh or wagon rides.  As soon as he would hear that the grandchildren or nieces and nephews were coming over, he would start getting the horses ready and planning an adventure.

Louie was predeceased by his parents John Robert and Catherine Malcolm, his brothers Patrick, Arthur and Christopher, his sisters Agnes, Freida, Jeanne and infant sister Rita, his sisters-in-law Lillian Malcolm and Annie Malcolm, his brothers-in-law Dan Monkman and Frank Desjarlais and his granddaughter Emily Beaulieu.

Louie leaves to mourn and will forever be lovingly remembered by his partner and best friend Bernice, his daughters Donna, Charlene and Cherish, his sons Dwayne, Jeffrey, Wallace and Kevin, his sisters Marie, Roseanna, Suzette, Patsy, Virginia (Michael) and Yvette, his brothers Andrew and Garry (Muriel).  Louie will be missed by his 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends.

Celebrate My Life

Remember me with love and joy,
Let gratitude fill your heart
Thankful for the time we had,
Gone...yet not apart.

If we measured life in moments,
Not in months or years ,
I lived a hundred lifetimes,
Loved by all who hold me dear.

I hope you'll find your smile,
and generously speak my name,
Share stories and my heart,
Your love for life unchanged.
Celebrate the life I lived
I will be watching from above,
I am always with you,
Sending you my light and love.
