Adam Smith Obituary

Adam Henry Smith was born on his grandparent’s farm in the Municipality of Grandview on March 19th, 1927, to Rupert and Lena (Mandryk) Smith. He was the middle child of a family of five.

Adam had a short school career, as was typical at the time, as he was needed to work on the family farm after completing grade 4. In addition to helping with the family farm, Adam also found work with various neighbours to also support the family.

In the fall of 1946, Adam went to work in Flin Flon for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. He worked in the kitchen, in the mill, and he also worked underground running the diamond drill. During his five and half years in Flin Flon he joined the Reserve Army in 1948.

After leaving the HBMS, Adam did a variety of jobs including farming in Grandview, working at a sawmill in Roblin and plumbing in Edmonton. In the spring of 1957, Adam began working for Bud Winfield on the Cat doing road construction. It was that spring where he met the love of his life, Doris Smith, as she cooked in the cook house for the crew. They were married in the Gladmar Luthern Church in Gladmar, Saskatchewan. They lived in a small home-built trailer during this time until they bought his parents’ farm in 1960.

Adam and Doris both worked on the farm together. In February of 1972, the family suffered a great loss on a very stormy night when a fire took their barn, cattle, and pigs. Adam and Doris had many hardships, but also had many good times. Adam described the farm as one of his favorite places.

Adam and Doris were blessed with seven wonderful children; five daughters, Beth, Alice, Diane (Norman), Joy, and Fay (Brian); two sons, Henry (Jackie) and Adam (Denise); twelve grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. They also took care of and raised many other children. Their home and hearts were always open to anyone and everyone. They also made certain that all had plenty to eat, even though they themselves had very little.

Adam enjoyed a wonderful life on the farm where he spent many hours hunting, fishing, and trapping. In 1984, they decided to move to town. Adam continued farming until 1993. After retiring from the farm Adam made many trips up town to play cards, snooker, and to have coffee with ‘the boys.’

Adam passed away quietly on April 23, 2024, at the Crocus Court Personal Care in Roblin, Manitoba where he had resided for the past five years. He was extremely grateful for the wonderful care that he received during stay there.
