Mary Derhak (nee Yarush)

DERHAK, Mary

It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Mary Derhak, on January 18, 2012, in the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, at 90 years of age.

Mary was born in Oak Brae, Manitoba on February 9, 1921, to Paul and Dora Yarush (nee Fediuk).  She received her education at Janowsky School in the Oak Brae district, and then worked on the family farm with her parents.  It was at this time that she met the love of her life, Michael Derhak.  They were married on October 7, 1939, in the church at Weiden.

Following their marriage, Mike and Mary farmed in the Sifton district until their retirement to Dauphin.

Mary and Mike loved the outdoors, enjoying many summers camping and fishing at Manipogo Beach, and later at their cottage.  Many beautiful memories were shared with their grandchildren who will never forget the idyllic summers with Baba and Gido at Manipogo.

Mary was a very generous, gentle and kind person.  She loved people, and was often known to slip a “Werther’s Original” into one’s hand during a greeting, whether it was a close friend, or sometimes a total stranger.  Entertaining friends and family was her specialty.  When you came over for a visit, a light lunch often turned into a sumptuous meal, and you never went home hungry.

Mary and Mike enjoyed travelling and she often spoke of the nine trips to Cuba, and the trip of her life to Ukraine in 1990.

Following her husband’s passing in July of 1992, Mary continued to reside in her home until this past fall, when she became a resident of the Personal Care Home due to failing health.

We say farewell to a loving and gentle soul, and whether it was Mom, Aunty Mary, or Baba, we will miss you deeply.

Mary leaves to cherish many fond memories, her loving family; son Royal and wife Rose of Brandon; granddaughter Jackie Derhak of Winnipeg; grandson Quentin and wife Kelsey of Brandon; one sister Nellie Mandley of Medicine Hat, Alberta; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Dora Yarush; her husband of 52 years marriage, Michael, on July 26, 1992; and two sisters, Anne and Lena Smadello.

Prayers were offered on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin.  Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin, with the Rev. Fr. Oleg Bodnarski celebrating.  Metro Lukie served as Cantor.  Terry Daniels served as Crossbearer.  Jackie Derhak delivered the eulogy.  Interment followed at the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.  Laying Mary to rest were pallbearers Carsten Pellman, Bob Derhak, Don Derhak, Roxanne Altenburg, Wayne Daniels, and Bruce Black.

Should friends so desire, the family requests that Mary be remembered by contributions to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

Вічная память

Arrangements were entrusted to Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Services with funeral homes in Dauphin, Roblin and Ste. Rose du Lac.
