John Malowski

John Malowski of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away peacefully in Grandview Hospital at the age of 85 on January 13, 2014, with family at his side.

John Malowski was born in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba on March 12, 1928 to Steve and Annie (Mymko).  John was the second eldest child of 4.  He received his education at Wilford School.  As a young man he met his wife, Margaret Slobodzian, in Dauphin while she was a waitress at the Dauphin Bus Depot.  They married on May 27, 1950.  They settled one mile north from the family farm in the R.M. of Gilbert Plains.  John had a dream to be a lawyer someday but in 1952 his father died, so he and Margaret returned to the homestead to farm and care for the livestock.  Together they stayed and raised 4 children on the homestead.

Aside from the family farm, John stayed active in the community as a trustee for the Wilford School District until rural schools were closed in 1965.  He was president of the Keld Community Centre and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends.  In 1995, John and Margaret moved to Dauphin although John continued to drive out to the farm everyday – rain or shine.  John was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Young Men’s Society and served on the board for several years at St. George’s place.  He and Margaret were long time members of St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Parish.

John was a loving and devoted husband of 63 years.  They were always together.  In his later years, John loved to share time and laughter with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Malowski is survived by his wife, Margaret of Dauphin, daughter Sonya (Wayne), sons Larry (Val), David (Tanya) Malowski of Gilbert Plains, and daughter Sally Frykas (Brian) of Keld, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Vera Malowski of Dauphin, sisters-in-law Katie Kostuik of Fraser Lake, B.C., Emilla Pacholuk of Kelowna, B.C., and brother-in-law Bill Slobodzian of Winnipegosis.

He is predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters Cora Malowski and Nellie Kustra, sisters-in-law Nellie Ukrainec, Minnie Slobodzian, and brothers-in-law Dan, Paul and Peter Slobodzian.

Prayers were offered on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin.  Funeral service was held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. from St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Dauphin with the Rev. Fr. Brent Kuzyk officiating.  St. George’s Cantors provided choral accompaniment.  Tayden Malowski served as Crossbearer.  The eulogy celebrating John’s life was delivered by Tim Frykoda.  Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.  Laying John to rest were Pallbearers Tim Frykoda, Jen Frykas, Kris Malowski, Curtis Malowski, Dan Syrnyk and Cortney Malowski.  Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Ron and Myrna Koshowski, Steve and Ivy Malowski, and Frank and Olive Michaleski.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of one’s choice.
