With sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of Jean Nakonechny at the age of 89 years at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre.
Jean was born on the farm at Garland, Manitoba on May 18, 1922 to Sam and Matrona Zachidniak, one of 14 children. Jean is survived by her sister Margaret (Douglas) Newton of Winnipeg and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her parents, brothers Alec, Dan, Jack, Nick and Paul, and sisters Anne, Alice, Katherine, Mary, Nellie, Olga and Pauline.
Jean worked in Toronto and Winnipeg then came home to look after her mother in Garland. In October 1953 she married Paul Nakonechny, her devoted husband of 58 years. She continued to look after her mother until her mother’s passing. Paul and Jean farmed just south of Ethelbert until 1977, when they moved to Dauphin. Jean is remembered for her hard work on the farm – a true mixed farm – gardening, milking, chickens, turkey and pigs, cattle, hay and grain. She is especially remembered for her cooking skills, many happy hours at the kitchen table with her extended family and friends, her infectious laughter and sense of humour. She was a caring person and was affectionately known as “Auntie Jean” to the neighbours’ children.
In her later years Jean was troubled with major illnesses with which she coped valiantly with the assistance of husband Paul. Many thanks to the home care workers who came every day for the past two years and supportive friends and neighbours.
Funeral service was held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin with the Reverend Father Oleg Bodnarski officiating. Areta Kozar served as Cantor. Interment followed in the Ethelbert Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers were Emery Pacholko, Bailey Pacholko, Evan Pacholko, Brian Reynard, Mike Matwee and Ed Pacholko.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.Print This Post
