Helen Soloway (nee Pelypiw)

SOLOWAY

It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Helen Soloway on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at her home in Pulp River.

Left to cherish many fond memories of Helen are her son Leslie, daughter-in-law Eileen, son Orville, daughter-in-law Debbie, son Harvey and special friend Kathy; daughter Angeline, son-in-law Kevin, grandchildren, CiJae Filipchuk and special friend Scott, Brandi and Evan Soloway, Steven Soloway and Kristen and Courtney Soloway; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Steve, parents Fred and Catherine (Zawersowany) Pelypiw; brother John, wife Mary; brother Michael, wife Irene; sister Anne, husband John; sister Mary, husband Tony; brother William, wife Celia; brother Anton, wife Shirley; sister Nellie; brother Peter, wife Adeline; and sister Jean.

In November 1944, Helen married Steve Soloway in the Pulp River Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church.  After their wedding, Steve and Helen lived on the Soloway family farm with his mother Daisy Soloway.  In 1946, Steve and Helen moved to the homestead of Steve’s sister Annie (Soloway) Andreychuk one mile south of the Pulp River corner, near the Pulp River cemetery.  Leslie was born in 1951.   Here they operated a mixed farm and sold turkeys and chickens for additional money.

Steve and Helen purchased a quarter section of land and in 1955, Steve, Helen and Leslie moved three quarters of a mile south to their new farm.  Orville was born four days later.  Since the only buildings on the property were a large barn near the river and a grain bin, Steve and Helen moved a granary onto the property and made this their home for the summer months, while they hurried to build their one-room home before the winter came.  In 1958 and 1960, Harvey and Angeline were born.

After Steve’s sudden passing in 1966, Helen continued to farm with her sons, and with the help of family and neighbours.  In the later years when her sons took over the farming responsibilities, Helen continued to keep active by raising chickens, geese and ducks.  Helen took great pleasure in her cooking, gardening and canning.  Helen also loved to collect recipes; she always said she could write her own cookbook.  Helen was always ready to feed whoever came into the yard, no one left hungry.

Helen will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Prayers were offered on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin.  Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., from the Sts. Vladimir & Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church in Pine River, with the Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak celebrating.  Holly Hryhoruk served as Cantor.  Serving as Crossbearers were CiJae Filipchuk, Brandi Soloway, Evan Soloway, Kristen Soloway, and Courtney Soloway.  Kristen Soloway delivered the eulogy.  Interment followed in the Pulp River & District Cemetery in Pulp River.  Laying Helen to rest were Pallbearers James Komarniski, Duane Komarniski, Ernie Serwa, Arnold Pelly, Myron Komarniski, and Manuel Pelly.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Pulp River & District Cemetery.

Vichnaya Pamyat
