On Monday, January 23, 2012, Alexander Holowachuk passed away in Prince Rupert, BC, at the age of 78 years.
Alex was born on February 8, 1933, in Pine River, MB, where he grew up and was educated. On October 20, 1962, he married Frances Nykyha. A few years after their marriage they moved to Dauphin, where Alex was employed with the Canadian National Railway. After retiring from the CNR, he often travelled back to the old family farm in Pine River, where he would pick berries, mushrooms, and just walk around and enjoy the area. He would always be looking for Lady Slippers, and when he found them he would dig them up and bring them home.
Alex’s father taught him how to make straw hats, and as we would sit and visit, he would often say, “one of these days I will teach you how to make a straw hat”. Unfortunately, we never did make one of those folk art hats.
Alex loved to go for coffee. Both morning and afternoon (and also sometimes in the evening) you would see him at the local coffee shops, “having a cup of coffee and a visit”.
Alex is survived by his brother Peter and wife Celia; his sisters Anne Boyachuk, Mary Gogal, Jean Poitras, Ann Watson, and Tillie Lewycky; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Alex was predeceased by his parents Anton and Pauline (nee Dowbush) Holowachuk; his brothers Dmetro, Steve, and John; his brother-in-law Michael Lewycky; and his sisters Stella Chornoby, Zonia Harapiak, and Eunice Hrynkiw.
Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel in Dauphin, with the Reverend Karen Kuzek officiating. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Peter Harapiak, Adam Boyachuk, Bob Boyachuk, Garry Dixon, Bill Dudar, and Mitch Chornoby.
